When designing a system for a motor-home or caravan, it is assumed that the auxiliary or house battery will be recharged on a regular basis from the vehicle’s alternator when driving. Because the vehicle provides additional battery charging when motoring, the solar system does not have to be sized to replace 100% of the daily power consumption. We usually size the solar component to contribute 60% of the daily power consumption—this means that the auxiliary battery will provide the daily shortfall because the vehicle engine is run again.
