Solar hot water rebate increased to $1,600 – Means test abolished

5 February 2009

Conergy, a global leader in the manufacture and distribution of solar and wind energy systems, has welcomed news that the Rudd Government’s means test on solar hot water system rebates has been removed, allowing all Australians access to funding support when replacing their electric storage unit with a solar hot water system or heat pump unit.

“We are glad to see that the Federal Government has amended the solar water heater / heat pump rebate and that Minister Garrett and others have removed the means test. This was a discriminatory policy mechanism which didn’t value the matching investment by higher income groups”, Conergy Australia’s Managing Director Rodger Meads said.

“We congratulate the Federal Government for hearing this message and removing the means test” Mr Meads said.

“It is important to note the $1,600 amount is subject to changes due to other legislative controls that Government has, and that by removing the means test, all Australians that still have their hot water being stored and heated by a conventional electric storage unit can now change these over immediately. One of the easiest and most effective ways to improve the energy efficiency of their homes is by installing a solar water heater.

“The rebate is available to all households that change over from an electric hot water unit to a solar from the 4th February 2009. Rebate application forms are available from the official government web site www.environment.gov.au/settlements/renewable/solarhotwater and will be accessible form the 26th February with payments to be paid to home owners between 6 to 8 weeks following lodgement to the department.

Conergy Australia is a leading manufacturer of high efficiency flat plate collector solar water heaters and heat pump systems and distributes these throughout Australia as well as its large export markets in Asia, Pacific Islands, Africa and Europe. Systems comply with Australian Standards and achieve some of the highest REC efficiency ratings in Australia.
